He took a slow breath.

"I'm going to report what happened. The appropriate people can determine what needs to be investigated."

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're destroying our family."

Marcus looked toward the children.

Then back at her.

"No. I'm trying to understand why my daughter was afraid to tell me she needed shoes."

That stopped her.

For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to answer.

Then she looked away.

Marcus asked the supervisor to help arrange for the report without creating unnecessary attention around the children.

He wasn't interested in having a crowd watch Vanessa being questioned.

He wanted the evidence preserved.

The belongings recovered if possible.

And the children protected from further pressure.

While arrangements were made, Marcus sat beside Nia.

He placed the white sneaker box on the table.

Then he looked at her.

"Sweetheart, can I ask you something?"

She nodded.

"Have you been afraid to talk to me?"

Nia stared at the box.

For several seconds, she didn't answer.

Then she whispered.

"Sometimes."

Marcus felt the words strike him harder than any accusation Vanessa had made.

He lowered his head.

Then spoke quietly.

"I'm sorry."

Nia looked up.

He continued.

"I should've noticed."

For a moment, the girl seemed confused.

She'd expected him to ask why she hadn't been braver.

Why she didn't tell him sooner.

Why she allowed Vanessa to take things.

Instead, he was apologizing.

And that made her cry harder.

Marcus didn't try to fix the moment with a promise that everything would immediately become perfect.

He knew better.

The necklace had been missing for months.

Nia's shoes had been deteriorating for weeks.

And the children had clearly been frightened of Vanessa's reactions.

Those problems weren't going to disappear because their father finally understood part of what was happening.

He looked toward Nia.

"Can I hold your hand?"

She nodded.

He took it gently.

For several seconds, they sat together.

Then he asked whether she'd like to tell him more.

Nia looked toward Vanessa.

Her stepmother was seated across the room, speaking quietly with the store supervisor about contacting a lawyer.

Marcus noticed the glance.

He leaned closer.

"You don't have to explain everything right now."

Nia swallowed.

Then asked a question that made his chest ache.

"Will you believe me?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Yes."

She stared.

He continued.

"And if I don't understand something, I'll ask questions. I won't punish you for telling me what happened."

For a moment, she seemed to consider whether she could trust the words.

Then she nodded.

Marcus squeezed her hand gently.
