The counselor gave him a simple answer.

"Be consistently available. Listen without making her responsible for your guilt."

Marcus stared.

For a moment, the words seemed almost painful.

Then he nodded.

He understood.

His daughter didn't need to comfort him because he'd failed to notice.

She needed him to become someone who would notice from now on.

When Marcus returned to his sister's house, Nia was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

Caleb and Ava were nearby, working on a puzzle.

His sister had arranged for all three children to spend a quiet morning together while the adults coordinated next steps.

Nia looked up when her father entered.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain.

Then she noticed the white sneaker box in his hand.

He'd brought the old shoes too.

He placed the box beside her.

"I thought you might want these here."

She smiled faintly.

"Thanks."

Marcus sat across from her.

For several seconds, he watched her drawing.

It showed a small house beside a garden with purple flowers.

He recognized the style.

Her mother used to draw flowers the same way.

He looked toward her.

"That's beautiful."

Nia shrugged.

"It's not finished."

"Can I see it when it is?"

She looked surprised.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

For a moment, Marcus considered telling her about the missing letters and the counselor meeting immediately.

Then he decided to begin with something simpler.

"Would you like to go for a walk later?"

Nia hesitated.

"Just us?"

He nodded.

"If you want."

She looked down at the drawing.

Then smiled.

"Yeah."

Marcus felt something loosen inside his chest.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't proof that everything was fixed.

But his daughter had agreed to spend time with him.

And after the previous day, that felt like something precious.

Across the table, Caleb looked toward Ava.

Then asked whether they could come too.

Marcus smiled.

"Maybe after Nia and I get back, we can all go somewhere."

Caleb nodded.

Ava grinned.

"Can we get ice cream?"

Marcus laughed softly.

"We'll see."

For the first time since the department store, all three children smiled.

And Marcus realized that building a safe family again would happen through ordinary moments as much as through legal decisions.

They took their walk that afternoon along a quiet path beside a neighborhood park.

Nia wore her new sneakers.

Marcus noticed she kept looking down at them, almost as though she expected someone to announce the purchase had been a mistake. He resisted the urge to tell her repeatedly that the shoes belonged to her, because he understood that reassurance would mean more after weeks of consistent behavior.
