He wanted to gather her into his arms and promise she'd never feel frightened again.

But he knew that wasn't something he could guarantee with a sentence.

He needed to change what happened after this conversation.

Where she lived.

Who could control her belongings.

How she could reach him.

And whether she believed her needs mattered.

He looked toward Caleb and Ava.

Both were watching quietly.

Then he said.

"You two did the right thing by speaking."

Caleb lowered his eyes.

Ava began crying.

Marcus moved closer.

"Hey. What's wrong?"

The little girl looked toward her mother.

Then whispered.

"Is our family going to break?"

For a moment, Marcus couldn't speak.

He had no simple answer.

Vanessa was their mother.

He was their stepfather.

And the marriage was now in serious trouble.

He wasn't going to lie to them.

So he answered carefully.

"There may be changes. But none of this is your fault, and nobody should ask you to hide something wrong to keep adults happy."

Ava stared at him.

Then asked.

"Are you still going to love us?"

Marcus felt his eyes fill.

He leaned forward.

"Of course."

Then he looked at Caleb.

"You too."

The boy nodded quickly.

For a moment, all three children moved closer.

Marcus put his arms around them.

And the white sneaker box remained on the table beside the recovered silver necklace.

The store manager helped complete the purchase before the family left.

Marcus didn't ask Nia to choose between the shoes and the other school supplies she'd needed.

He took her back to the footwear section with a female store associate who patiently checked the fit and made sure the shoes were comfortable.

Nia tried on the white sneakers.

For several seconds, she simply looked down.

The soles were intact.

The fabric didn't rub her heel.

And when she walked a few steps, there was no uncomfortable flap beneath her left foot.

Marcus watched.

Then asked.

"How do they feel?"

Nia looked up.

"Good."

He smiled gently.

"Really good, or just okay?"

For a moment, she hesitated.

Then she laughed softly.

"Really good."

It was the first laugh he'd heard from her that afternoon.

He bought the shoes.

Then he helped her choose two pairs of jeans, socks, and a backpack.

He also checked whether Caleb and Ava had everything they needed.

Vanessa remained in the customer-service area while the necessary discussions continued.

Marcus didn't want the children to feel their purchases had become evidence that one of them deserved more than another.

The problem wasn't that Caleb and Ava received clothes.
