The evening sunlight moved slowly across the bedroom floor.

The necklace rested against Nia's shirt.

And her mother's words remained open on her lap.

Later that night, Marcus went downstairs to clean the kitchen.

He gathered plates, folded napkins, and placed the leftover cake in the refrigerator.

Then he noticed something near the doorway.

Nia's old sneakers.

The worn pair from the department store.

He'd kept them in a small bag after the confrontation, intending to ask his daughter whether she wanted to throw them away.

For months, he'd avoided deciding for her.

Now he lifted the bag.

The shoes were still badly worn.

The left sole had separated almost entirely.

The canvas near the toe was discolored.

And the temporary repair strip had curled away from the fabric.

Marcus studied them.

For a moment, he remembered the white sneaker box hitting the checkout counter.

Vanessa's voice.

Nia's lowered head.

And the moment the silver-heart necklace fell from the shopping bag.

He remembered his daughter's words.

She told me your card was only meant for her kids.

He closed his eyes.

It was astonishing how much pain could hide behind an ordinary shopping trip.

A father could believe his family was comfortable because the bills were paid.

A child could live in a beautiful house and still feel afraid to ask for shoes.

And someone could stand in the middle of a crowded store surrounded by expensive purchases while feeling as though she didn't deserve even the smallest thing for herself.

Marcus opened his eyes.

Then heard footsteps behind him.

Nia stood in the kitchen doorway.

She wore comfortable pajamas and her silver-heart necklace.

For a moment, she looked toward the bag.

Then smiled faintly.

"You kept them?"

Marcus nodded.

"I wasn't sure whether you wanted them."

She approached.

For several seconds, she studied the old sneakers.

Then she looked toward her father.

"I don't think I need them anymore."

Marcus smiled gently.

"Okay."

She hesitated.

Then added.

"But can we take a picture?"

He looked surprised.

"A picture?"

Nia nodded.

"Of the old shoes next to the new ones."

Marcus considered the request.

Then smiled.

"Of course."

They placed the old sneakers on the kitchen floor.

Nia brought down the newer pair she'd worn through the school year.

The white fabric was slightly scuffed now.

The soles showed ordinary signs of use.

But they were intact.

Comfortable.

And hers.

Marcus took the photograph.

Then showed it to his daughter.

For a moment, she studied the image.

She didn't smile immediately.

Then she looked up.

"I think I want to keep the picture."
