Marcus stood a few feet from the counter, wearing a dark-navy business suit, white shirt, and polished black shoes. At forty, he was a handsome, broad-shouldered Black American man with neatly faded hair, a trimmed beard, and the tired expression of someone who had just finished a difficult meeting. He held his car keys in one hand and looked from the overloaded shopping bags to his daughter's empty arms.

His welcoming smile had disappeared.

Vanessa immediately straightened.

"Marcus! I thought you were still downtown."

He didn't answer.

His eyes moved toward Nia's feet.

Then to the white sneaker box on the returns pile.

He recognized it.

He had seen Nia looking at the same shoes online the previous weekend, carefully comparing prices and colors before asking whether she could have them for school. He had told her yes and specifically reminded Vanessa to buy them during today's shopping trip.

Marcus looked toward the cashier.

"Are those being returned?"

The young woman hesitated.

Vanessa answered first.

"They didn't fit."

Nia looked up sharply.

Marcus noticed.

He turned toward his daughter.

"Sweetheart, did you try them on?"

Nia opened her mouth.

Vanessa shot her a warning glance.

For an instant, the girl seemed to shrink inside her yellow sweatshirt. Her shoulders tightened, and her hands curled against her sides. Marcus recognized the movement, though he couldn't immediately understand why it made him uneasy.

"Nia?"

She stared at the marble-patterned floor tiles.

Then whispered, "She said your card wasn't for me."

The words were quiet.

But they reached everyone standing nearby.

Marcus became still.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Oh, please. She's being sensitive."

Marcus looked at his wife.

"What did you tell her?"

Vanessa shrugged.

"I told her we had a budget. She's been asking for expensive things all morning."

The cashier glanced toward the seventy-nine-dollar sneaker box.

Then toward the hundreds of dollars in clothing she'd just scanned.

Marcus followed her gaze.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he walked toward the returns pile, picked up the white box, and placed it gently in front of Nia.

"These are yours."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Marcus, don't undermine me in front of the children."

He looked toward her.

"I asked you to buy shoes for all three of them."

"She already has shoes."

He looked down at Nia's feet.

The opening along the sole was clearly visible.

Marcus felt something inside his chest turn cold.

He crouched beside his daughter.

"How long have they been like that?"

Nia looked frightened.

"A little while."

"How long, sweetheart?"

She swallowed.

"Since before summer."

Marcus stared at the damaged shoe.

Then he looked up at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her eyes filled.

"I tried."

He stood slowly.

For a moment, he seemed unable to move.

Then Vanessa stepped between them.
