Those evenings were rare.
But Nia remembered each one.
Then Vanessa entered their lives.
Marcus met Vanessa at a business networking event in Atlanta.
She was thirty-six at the time, newly divorced, and raising two children of her own. She worked in luxury retail merchandising and possessed an effortless social confidence that Marcus found comforting after years of grief.
She was thoughtful during their early dates.
She remembered small details about his work, asked sincere questions about Nia, and never seemed irritated when he needed to cancel plans because his daughter was sick or struggling at school. When Marcus mentioned that Nia still missed her mother, Vanessa said children shouldn't be rushed through grief.
That answer mattered to him.
He wasn't looking for someone to replace his wife.
He wanted companionship, and he wanted Nia to grow up surrounded by affection rather than silence.
Vanessa's children, Caleb and Ava, were cheerful and curious.
Caleb loved building miniature cars from construction kits. Ava enjoyed drawing and arranging elaborate pretend tea parties for her stuffed animals.
The first time the children met, they spent nearly an hour playing in Marcus's backyard.
Nia showed Ava how to make paper flowers.
Caleb asked whether he could see the engineering models in Marcus's home office.
Marcus watched them laughing together and felt something he hadn't experienced in a long time.
Hope.
When he proposed to Vanessa a year later, he asked Nia how she felt.
She was eleven by then.
She hesitated.
Then said she liked Caleb and Ava.
Marcus smiled.
"What about Vanessa?"
Nia looked toward the kitchen, where Vanessa was helping Ava prepare sandwiches.
"She's nice."
Marcus studied his daughter's face.
"Are you sure you're comfortable?"
Nia nodded.
She was trying to give him the answer she believed would make him happy.
He didn't know that.
He only knew she'd smiled.
The wedding was small.
Marcus's sister attended with her family.
Vanessa's children wore matching formal outfits.
Nia wore a pale-yellow dress and stood beside her father during the photographs.
Everyone commented on how beautiful the blended family looked.
For several months, it was beautiful.
Then the changes began.
At first, Vanessa's decisions seemed ordinary.
She rearranged the kitchen because she preferred a different organization system. She replaced some old furniture and suggested creating a shared homework area for the children. Marcus welcomed her efforts because he had been struggling to manage the household alone.
She also suggested that Nia might benefit from changing bedrooms.
