Jeans.
Sweater.
No makeup.
He did not open immediately.
She knocked again.
“I know you’re in there.”
He opened the door but kept himself in the doorway.
His wife looked past him.
“The dog’s here.”
“He left with me.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.”
The husband stared.
“What do you want?”
Her eyes filled.
“You called his wife.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your boss told you to wear the red dress and meet him at 9:30.”
Her face went still.
“You read my email.”
“I saw the notification.”
“You opened my laptop.”
“The message chain was already open.”
“You violated my privacy.”
The husband stared in disbelief.
“Is that really the first argument you want?”
She looked away.
He continued.
“You have been sleeping with your married boss.”
Silence.
“How long?”
Her eyes shut.
“Please let me inside.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
People walked down the hotel hallway.
His wife lowered her voice.
“Six months.”
The number almost meant nothing.
He had already been living inside the answer all night.
“Was he the only one?”
She looked startled.
“What?”
“His wife thinks there are others.”
“I don’t know what she told you.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“Yes.”
“He was the only one.”
The husband nodded.
His wife looked toward the room.
“Can we please talk privately?”
