He stepped into the hallway instead.

Pulled the door closed behind him.

The dog whined from inside.

His wife stared.

“You won’t even let me in?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because right now that room feels more like my home than our house does.”

That landed.

She looked down.

The husband asked:

“What happened last night?”

“You know what happened.”

“I saw part of it.”

Her head snapped up.

“You were there?”

“Down the street.”

“You watched me?”

“I watched after she came.”

His wife laughed in disbelief.

“This is insane.”

“No.”

“What’s insane is I still don’t know what those papers were.”

Her expression changed.

He noticed.

“What did she show you?”

His wife’s eyes filled with fresh fear.

“Company records.”

“What kind?”

“She says he’s been taking money.”

“From the company?”

“From client deposits.”

The husband said nothing.

His wife continued.

“She thinks he’s been moving money through side vendors.”

“And?”

“She showed me transfers.”

“What does that have to do with you?”

His wife looked away.

Everything in his body tightened.

“What does that have to do with you?”

“I approved some invoices.”

His voice became quieter.

“Knowing?”

“No.”

“Absolutely not.”

“He told me they were expedited vendor accounts.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“How much?”

“Maybe two hundred thousand.”

The husband took a step back.

His wife rushed:

“I didn’t take anything.”
