He could not unknow the way she looked at him.

At eight, he drove to work.

He did not tell anyone.

He moved through meetings.

Answered emails.

Reviewed a project.

At lunch, he opened his wife’s message thread.

Another text had arrived.

Are you seriously not coming home?

Then:

I have meetings until late anyway, so whatever.

He typed three different responses.

Deleted each.

By late afternoon, he realized several things he needed were still at the house.

A medication refill.

Paperwork for a Friday client meeting.

His external backup drive.

Another work jacket.

He could have waited.

He did not want to.

At 7:30, he texted:

Coming by for my things.

No answer.

He assumed she was at work.

The house was dark when he arrived except for the under-cabinet lights in the kitchen.

The dog remained at the hotel.

That made the house feel emptier.

He unlocked the door.

Walked upstairs first.

Collected his medication.

The work drive.

Two shirts.

His passport, mostly because he no longer liked leaving important documents where anger lived.

He returned downstairs.

That was when he saw the laptop.

His wife’s personal laptop sat open on the marble island.

The screen had dimmed but not locked.

He stopped.

Normally he would have closed it.

Their rule had always been simple.

They knew one another’s phone codes.

Laptop passwords.

Bank logins.

Not because they inspected each other.

Because secrecy had never been part of the house.

He walked toward the kitchen sink.

An email notification appeared in the upper-right corner of the screen.

He would later wish it had not.

Not because ignorance was better.

Because there is something cruel about the exact second before your life changes, when your body still belongs to the person you were five seconds earlier.

The notification read:

From: her boss.

Wear the red one tonight, sweetheart.

The husband froze.
