“Right.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Turn everything into a test.”

“It wasn’t a test.”

He opened the door.

His wife folded her arms.

“So that’s it?”

He looked back.

“I don’t know.”

“Unbelievable.”

That word nearly stopped him.

Instead he walked outside.

The dog trotted beside him.

The door closed behind them.

His wife did not follow.

The husband spent the night at a small hotel twelve minutes from their house.

It accepted dogs.

That became his only requirement.

The room smelled faintly of carpet cleaner.

The dog immediately claimed the armchair.

The husband sat on the edge of the bed and stared at his phone.

No message.

He told himself he did not care.

At 11:03, he checked again.

Nothing.

Midnight.

Nothing.

At 1:17, he finally received one.

You’re being ridiculous.

He read it.

Waited.

A second message.

Come home tomorrow after you’ve calmed down.

Not I’m sorry.

Not we need to talk.

Not I shouldn’t have said that.

Come home after you’ve calmed down.

The problem, apparently, was his reaction.

He turned off the phone.

The dog lifted his head.

The husband looked toward him.

“She said she’d rather kiss you.”

The dog thumped his tail.

“Don’t get smug.”

The husband slept perhaps two hours.

He woke at six because the dog needed outside.

Morning air was cool.

They walked behind the hotel along a narrow strip of wet grass while delivery trucks moved on the service road.

He felt strange.

Not heartbroken exactly.

Numb.

A marriage did not become unreal because one sentence wounded it.

But something had shifted.
