He read it again.

The name.

The sentence.

The small heart icon at the end.

He stared until the notification disappeared.

His first instinct was denial.

Maybe work.

Maybe a joke.

Maybe some industry event.

Red dress.

Sweetheart used sarcastically.

All ridiculous.

All preferable.

His second instinct was to open everything.

He nearly did.

Then stopped.

Because his wife’s contempt had already made him feel small.

He would not turn himself into someone frantically searching every private corner of her life without thinking.

He stood with both hands against the counter.

Breathed.

Then looked at what was already visible.

The email application was open.

The message sat near the top of the inbox.

He clicked it.

One sentence.

Wear the red one tonight, sweetheart. Same place. 9:30.

Below it was a chain.

Not long.

Enough.

His wife:

Can’t tonight. He’s acting weird.

Boss:

You told me he left.

Wife:

He did. But he may come back.

Boss:

Then lock the door.

Wife:

You’re terrible.

Boss:

You like terrible.

The husband stopped reading.

His stomach turned.

He stepped away.

Then returned.

He photographed the visible exchange with his phone.

Not because he had some sophisticated legal strategy.

Because a primitive part of his mind feared the evidence would disappear and he would later be told he imagined it.

He did not search deleted folders.

Did not guess passwords.

Did not install anything.

He documented what sat open in front of him.

Then he noticed the date on an older visible message.

Six weeks earlier.
