"But you don't have to take something away from somebody else to show it."

The boy considered that.

Then he whispered, "I didn't want her chicken."

"I saw."

"She likes chicken."

"Your stepsister?"

The boy nodded.

"She likes the crispy part."

The father almost smiled.

"She does."

The boy turned the truck over in his hands.

"Mom says I need more food because I'm a boy."

The father stayed quiet.

"But my sister gets hungry too."

"Yes, she does."

The boy looked confused.

"Then why does Mom get mad when I say that?"

The father thought carefully.

"Sometimes grown-ups make unfair decisions. Sometimes they don't like being questioned."

The boy looked down.

"Did I do something bad?"

"No."

"Because I ate it?"

The father shook his head.

"No. You were told to eat your dinner. What happened wasn't your responsibility."

The boy took a breath.

Then his voice dropped.

"Sometimes I give her my snacks."

The father leaned forward.

"When?"

"At school."

"Why?"

"Because she doesn't always have enough."

The father felt his stomach turn.

"Does she tell you she's hungry?"

"Not usually."

"Then how do you know?"

The boy shrugged.

"She watches people eat."

The father stared.

It was such an ordinary description.

A child watching other children eat.

Yet it said more than a dozen accusations.

The boy continued.

"One day she gave me her apple because Mom said I needed an extra snack."

He looked toward the hallway.

"I told her I didn't want it."

"What happened?"

"Mom got mad."

The father nodded slowly.

The boy twisted a wheel on the truck.

"Are you going to stop being my dad?"

The question struck unexpectedly.

The father looked at him.

"Why would you think that?"

The boy's eyes filled.

"Because Mom said families break when people don't respect each other."

The father swallowed.

The boy continued.

"She said your daughter doesn't respect her."

The father took a breath.

Then he moved from the chair to the edge of the bed.

"Listen to me. What's happening between your mom and me isn't your fault."
