He also left a message for his daughter's pediatrician, requesting an appointment to discuss her eating patterns, emotional distress, and any concerns that might require professional evaluation.

Then he emailed the school counselor.

He wrote carefully.

He did not accuse his wife of every terrible thing he feared.

He described what he had personally witnessed and what his daughter had disclosed.

He asked whether the school had noticed changes in her behavior, attendance, eating habits, or interactions with classmates.

Then he saved the video recording securely, retaining the original rather than editing it.

He also wrote a factual account of the evening while the details remained fresh.

He recorded the time he'd arrived home.

The words he'd heard.

What he'd seen.

What the children had said afterward.

He avoided speculation.

He wanted a reliable record.

Not an angry story that grew more dramatic each time he told it.

His phone rang just before four.

It was his wife.

"Where are you?"

"At my mother's."

"Obviously. When are you bringing my son home?"

He glanced toward the backyard.

"Would you like me to bring him this evening?"

"I want him home now."

"All right. I'll bring him."

She paused.

"And your daughter?"

"She's staying here with me tonight."

Silence.

Then his wife laughed bitterly.

"So that's what this is."

"What?"

"You're letting her play victim while you punish me."

He took a breath.

"This isn't about punishment."

"Then what is it about?"

"Making sure she's okay."

"She's fine."

He looked through the window.

His daughter was running across the grass, chasing her stepbrother with a foam airplane.

She was laughing.

He hadn't realized how much he'd missed that sound.

"She hasn't been fine," he said quietly.

His wife went silent.

Then she replied, "If you keep encouraging her to accuse me of things, you're going to destroy this family."

The father looked toward the children.

He answered slowly.

"A family isn't protected by making a child afraid to tell the truth."

His wife hung up.

He remained standing beside the window.

For the first time, he didn't call back to smooth things over.
