Automatically.
As though those two words had become a protective reflex.
The father felt uneasy.
He moved toward the doorway.
And there he saw his wife standing over his daughter's plate with silver kitchen tongs.
He saw the chicken lifted away.
He saw his stepson staring at his own plate.
He saw his daughter lower her eyes.
His phone was already in his hand because he had been checking a work message.
Without thinking much beyond the need to preserve what he was seeing, he began recording.
He captured the removal of the chicken.
The stepmother's cruel remarks.
The boy's discomfort.
And the little girl's silence.
He recorded only long enough to understand what was happening before announcing himself.
The footage was brief.
But it would eventually change the family's future.
Not because the father planned to humiliate his wife online.
Not because he wanted strangers to watch his daughter's pain.
But because he knew, instinctively, that he had just witnessed something his wife would later try to explain away.
And he needed to remember exactly what happened.
After dinner, the father took both children into the living room.
He put on a quiet animated movie and sat between them.
His daughter leaned against his left shoulder.
His stepson occupied the other side of the couch.
The boy was unusually silent.
Halfway through the movie, the little girl asked whether she could get a glass of water.
The father told her of course.
She hesitated.
Then she asked, "Should I use the small glass?"
He looked at her.
"Whichever glass you want."
She nodded and walked toward the kitchen.
A few seconds later, he followed.
He found her standing beside the cupboard, holding a plastic cup.
She looked startled when he entered.
"Sorry."
He frowned.
"Sorry for what?"
"I didn't ask which cup first."
The father stood still.
It was such a small sentence.
Almost nothing.
Yet it opened a door he suddenly wished had never been closed.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to ask permission to drink water."
She nodded quickly.
"Okay."
"Has somebody told you otherwise?"
