The boy had been asked to manage his mother's emotions.

His stepsister had been asked to manage his father's.

Both children had been given responsibilities that belonged to adults.

The father hugged him.

"It's kind of you to care about your mom. But making sure she isn't lonely isn't your job."

The boy didn't answer.

Then he whispered, "Can I call you tomorrow?"

"Of course."

They stood.

Before getting into the truck, the boy ran back toward his stepsister.

She stood beside the porch holding her stuffed rabbit.

He handed her a small orange toy car.

She looked confused.

"What's this?"

"My favorite one."

"I know."

"You can borrow it."

The girl smiled.

"But you always say nobody can touch it."

The boy shrugged.

"You can."

She hugged him.

The father looked away for a moment.

He was beginning to understand that the children had formed a quiet alliance long before he noticed anything was wrong.

They had been trying to protect each other.

And nobody had realized how much responsibility they were carrying.

The attorney's office occupied the second floor of a modest brick building near a shopping center.

There were no marble columns or dramatic city views.

The waiting room contained comfortable chairs, a coffee station, and a shelf of children's books.

The father appreciated that.

He arrived Monday morning with his phone, a small notebook, and a folder containing household documents.

The attorney was a middle-aged woman with calm eyes and a practical manner.

She listened without interrupting.

When he finished describing the dinner incident and his conversations with the children, she asked several precise questions.

Were both children legally his?

Had he adopted his stepson?

Was his daughter receiving any counseling?

Had there been previous incidents of physical aggression?

Was his wife currently living in the marital home?

Had he made any threats or taken actions that might complicate the situation?

He answered as carefully as he could.

The attorney explained that he needed to distinguish immediate safety planning from decisions about divorce, property, and the future of his relationship with his stepson.
