"I've spoken with her. They're welcome."

"Why?"

"Because I want them to have a quiet day."

His wife stepped forward.

"You're not taking my son anywhere without asking me."

The father set down the spatula.

"Then I'm asking. He wants to spend time with his grandmother and stepsister, and I'd like him to come."

"She isn't his grandmother."

He looked at her.

"She's treated him like one."

His wife looked away.

He continued.

"If you don't want him to come, I won't take him without your agreement."

The woman stared at him.

Then she looked toward the hallway.

"Fine. Let him go."

He nodded.

She pointed toward the breakfast table.

"But you're making me look bad on purpose."

He looked at the four plates.

"I'm making breakfast."

"Don't play innocent."

He remained silent.

A few minutes later, both children appeared.

His daughter walked cautiously into the kitchen.

She stopped when she saw the plates.

The father smiled.

"Morning, sweetheart."

"Morning."

"Sit down. Breakfast is ready."

She looked at the table.

"Which one's mine?"

He felt the question like a blow.

"Whichever seat you want."

She glanced toward her stepmother.

The woman said nothing.

The little girl chose a chair.

The father placed a plate in front of her.

She stared at the food.

"All of it?"

"All of it."

The boy sat opposite her.

He looked at his own plate.

Then at hers.

For a moment, the father thought the boy might say something.

Instead, he picked up his fork.

"These pancakes look good."

The father smiled.

"Thanks, buddy."

The boy took a bite.

"Really good."

His daughter smiled faintly.

Then she began eating.

The father sat with them.

He asked about school.

About a science project.

About the book his daughter was reading.

About the boy's next basketball game.

Small questions.

Ordinary conversation.

But something about the breakfast felt entirely different.

For the first time in weeks, his daughter ate without watching every movement her stepmother made.

And the father realized how much of childhood could disappear when a child stopped feeling safe at the family table.
