The little girl carried her stuffed rabbit, a book, and a small bag of crayons.

His wife stood on the porch.

She kissed her son.

Then she looked toward her stepdaughter.

"Be good."

The girl immediately nodded.

"I will."

The father saw the tension return to her shoulders.

He placed a hand gently on her back.

"We're going to Grandma's house to relax."

His wife looked at him.

"Call me when you get there."

"I will."

Then he helped both children into the truck.

As they drove away, the boy looked back through the rear window.

"Mom looks sad."

The father checked the mirror.

"Sometimes grown-ups feel sad when things are difficult."

"Is she mad at us?"

"No."

The boy remained quiet.

Then his daughter asked, "Are we sleeping at Grandma's?"

The father nodded.

"For tonight."

She looked toward her backpack.

"Will we come home?"

He met her eyes in the rearview mirror.

"Yes, sweetheart. We'll make sure you have a home where you feel safe."

She nodded.

Then she turned toward the window.

They drove through familiar neighborhoods beneath a clear Georgia sky.

The father had made this trip hundreds of times.

Birthday dinners.

Sunday barbecues.

Holiday gatherings.

Afternoons when his mother watched the children because he had a job that ran late.

But today, the drive felt different.

He wasn't bringing the children to visit.

He was bringing them somewhere they could stop being afraid.

And he understood that whatever happened next, he couldn't return to pretending his family was fine simply because the house looked peaceful from the street.

His mother opened the front door before they reached the porch.

She was seventy-one years old, with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun and the sturdy posture of someone who had spent four decades working in hospital administration.

She wore a loose yellow blouse, comfortable slacks, and an apron with tiny blue flowers.

The moment she saw the children, her face softened.

"Well, look who finally remembered where Grandma lives."

The boy grinned.

"Grandma!"
