What kept Mateo moving that night was not adrenaline so much as insulted conscience. Someone had used his uniform, his routine knock, and his instinct to help as part of a demolition plan. Someone had filled a child’s head with fire drills, false names, and threats about “the wrong police officer.” As the marine unit cut across the black water toward the abandoned treatment island, Mateo sat beside Lena in body armor that pressed painfully into still-tender bruises. Wind slapped spray against the hull. The island loomed ahead as a black shape broken by the skeleton of an old concrete pump station and two maintenance buildings left to rot after the city changed systems years earlier. Halfway there, dispatch patched through a new development from the hospital: Ava had vanished. Not escaped dramatically—simply gone, IV removed, one nurse distracted, back stairwell camera disabled for forty seconds. On Ava’s empty bed was a sticky note from the hospital gift shop. Four words: HE’LL BELIEVE ME NOW. Lena swore under her breath. “She went after them.” Mateo nodded. “Or they came for her.” They landed at the south dock without lights. Fresh rope marks scarred the cleats. Inside the first building they found footprints, food wrappers, and a child’s inhaler. In the second, they found Claire Mercer alive but zip-tied to a support pipe, face swollen from being struck. She said Simon had forced her to help move Jonah because “the case got too loud,” but when she hesitated on the boat, Donna knocked her down and left her behind. Claire, crying so hard she could barely shape words, said Ava had already reached the island before the police. “She followed us in another boat,” Claire said. “Simon took the boy to the pump station. Donna took Ava below.” Mateo asked about below. Claire looked at him with raw terror. “There’s an underground valve room. Simon said if the state ever came, that’s where the first mothers go to disappear.”
