By the time fire crews got the blaze under control, the assumption on scene was simple: the house had exploded with at least two people inside, maybe three if Mateo had not imagined the smaller figure in the window. But the house refused to behave like an ordinary fatal fire. The first problem came when Captain Lena Brooks from the Major Crimes unit walked through the smoking shell after midnight and found no bodies on the main floor, none near the staircase, none in the kitchen where the blast seemed strongest. The second problem came when investigators identified the homeowners. The place belonged to Dr. Simon Kessler, a respected child psychologist who had spent years consulting for county family services, and his wife Donna Kessler, who had once overseen foster placement intake for the region before retiring. To anyone who knew their names, they sounded like the least likely couple in the world to die inside an exploding home after a screaming argument. But then Lena found a third problem in the debris near what had been the dining room: part of a hard-wired detonation assembly, scorched but recognizable, embedded beneath a fallen beam. It wasn’t a gas leak. Someone had rigged the blast. Mateo, sitting in the back of an ambulance with gauze taped above his eyebrow, watched Lena through the haze of red-blue emergency lights and saw her expression harden as she turned the burnt piece of hardware over in a gloved hand. A firefighter brought out a melted silver frame found in the upstairs hallway. The photograph inside showed Simon and Donna smiling beside a blond woman in her early thirties and a little boy around eleven or twelve. On the back, written in black marker, were four words: Our family, finally complete. Mateo had never seen that woman or child listed on the property records. When he asked who they were, nobody on scene could answer. That was when the explosion stopped looking like a tragedy and started looking like the front door of a much larger lie.
