The underground valve room smelled of rust, lake water, and old concrete that had sweated through a hundred summers. Tactical officers moved in pairs through the narrow corridors while Mateo and Lena followed the faint echo of voices deeper under the pump station. They found Ava first—not dead, not even fully restrained, but kneeling on the wet floor with her wrists tied loosely in front, face bruised, eyes fixed on a steel door across the chamber. Donna stood behind her holding a flare gun, not a firearm, but dangerous enough in a room lined with ancient pipes and chemical residue. The steel door led into the smaller control chamber where Simon had taken Jonah. “One more step,” Donna called, “and he opens the gas line.” Lena froze, reading the arrangement instantly. Donna was not the mastermind Simon was, but she understood leverage. Mateo looked at Ava, who managed the smallest shake of her head as if warning him that rushing would cost the child. Through the steel door came Simon’s voice, oddly gentle, speaking to Jonah as though they were on a family outing. “You remember what happens if strangers take you, don’t you? They tell lies. They make mothers cry.” Then Jonah’s voice, shaky but trying to be brave: “Is Ava my mom?” Nobody in the room seemed to breathe. Donna’s expression flickered. Ava’s entire body leaned toward the door before she stopped herself. Simon answered after a beat too long. “She’s a sick woman who thinks she is.” That was the wrong lie at the wrong moment. Ava lifted her bound hands and screamed through the metal, “Jonah, your real name is Jonah Doyle! I wrote you letters! He kept them!” The silence on the other side was broken by a crash, then the scrape of something heavy. Donna jerked the flare gun up toward Ava’s head, but before she could fire, Claire—who had followed despite orders—appeared at the corridor mouth and shouted, “Mom, stop!” The distraction lasted less than a second, but it was enough. Mateo lunged.
