The blast lifted Mateo off the porch and hurled him backward across the walkway like a toy kicked by a giant boot. His shoulder struck the front hedge, his head clipped the curb, and for several seconds the world became a roaring white pressure full of broken glass, splintered wood, and the chemical sting of burning insulation. Neighbors later said the explosion sounded like a gas main erupting under the street. Mateo remembered it differently. To him it sounded personal, like the house had waited until he was close enough to hear it die. When he tried to breathe, ash scraped his throat. When he opened his eyes, half the front of the house was gone. Flames rolled along the exposed frame, curtains burned in the shattered windows, and chunks of plaster still rained down into the yard.
