The first useful witness was not a neighbor who saw the fireball, but an elderly widow named Colleen Mercer who lived directly across the street and had done what half the block secretly did every evening: sit in the dark behind her curtains and watch other people’s houses. Colleen told Lena and Mateo that an unfamiliar woman had gone into the Kessler home roughly ten minutes before the blast. White, maybe early thirties, dark hair pulled back, long coat, moving fast. Colleen had seen her pound on the front door until Simon Kessler himself let her in. At first the voices were muffled, but then the arguing rose loud enough to carry across the lawn. Colleen heard the woman yell, “I did what you asked. I brought him back. Where is my son?” She heard a man shout back, though she could not make out every word. Then she heard Donna Kessler cry, “She shouldn’t have come here. Not tonight.” Colleen said the woman sounded enraged, but not unstable. “Not crazy,” she insisted. “More like someone who’d been lied to for years and finally had proof.” Lena pressed her on one detail: when the woman said “my son,” was she talking about a child inside the house? Colleen nodded slowly, then admitted something else that made the case colder. About a minute before the explosion, she saw the front-room lamp go out. Right after that, she saw Simon pull the curtains fully shut, as if he did not want anyone outside seeing what happened next. Then came one final sentence, loud and unmistakable, spoken by a man with terrifying calm: “If you want him, you can die with us.” Colleen thought it was the kind of ugly thing furious people say without meaning. But once the blast turned out to be deliberate, the line sounded less like rage and more like advance notice. As Lena finished taking the statement, Mateo noticed Colleen staring at him with unexpected intensity. “Officer,” she said quietly, “whoever set that bomb knew you were coming up the walk. They waited until you were almost at the door.”
