She wasn't documenting the child's actual experience.
She was constructing a story.
And when ordinary footage didn't support that story, she began directing Lily to say things that weren't true.
The most revealing video was recorded four days before Marcus came home early.
Mason had been helping Lily assemble a wooden puzzle in the living room.
Vanessa entered and told Lily she needed to practice answering questions.
Mason looked up.
"What questions?"
His mother gave him a cold look.
"Adult questions."
Then she turned toward Lily.
"If someone asks whether Daddy leaves you hungry, what do you say?"
Lily frowned.
"Daddy gives me food."
Vanessa sighed.
"No, Lily. Think about today."
The child looked confused.
For a moment, she glanced toward Mason.
He could see she wanted help.
Vanessa continued.
"You were hungry today, weren't you?"
Lily nodded.
"And Daddy wasn't here."
Another nod.
"Then tell the camera Daddy left you hungry."
The little girl began twisting her cardigan.
For several seconds, she seemed uncertain.
Then she whispered.
"But you were here."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
Mason stood.
"Mom, stop."
She turned toward him.
"What?"
"She's not understanding because it's not true."
For a moment, Vanessa looked shocked.
Then she stepped closer.
"You are twelve years old. You don't get to tell me how to handle my family."
Mason swallowed.
"Lily's my family too."
That made Vanessa angrier.
She ordered him upstairs.
When he hesitated, she threatened to take his phone and cancel a school trip he'd been looking forward to for months.
Mason left.
But he didn't go far.
He stopped in the hallway, frightened and angry.
Then he heard Lily crying again.
Later, he wrote down what happened.
He also preserved a short recording showing his mother telling Lily to blame Marcus for food she was deliberately withholding.
That was the video he would eventually show his stepfather.
And by then, he had begun understanding that silence wouldn't protect anyone.
It would only give his mother more time.
Now, standing in the dining room with Lily in his arms, Marcus understood that the video on Mason's phone wasn't an isolated moment.
He looked at Vanessa.
She stood near the pantry, her beautiful face tense, one hand resting against the back of a chair.
