Marcus remained in contact under arrangements approved by the adults responsible for Mason.
He called regularly.
Sometimes they discussed school.
Other times they talked about basketball, science projects, or a model airplane Mason wanted to build.
During one call, Mason became unusually quiet.
Marcus noticed.
"Everything okay, buddy?"
The boy hesitated.
Then asked.
"Are you still my dad?"
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
He took a slow breath.
"I've loved being your stepdad, Mason, and that hasn't changed."
The boy remained silent.
Marcus continued.
"The adults have to work out the legal arrangements, but I still care about you. You don't lose that because you told the truth."
For several seconds, Mason didn't answer.
Then Marcus heard him crying softly.
He wished he could reach through the phone and hold the boy.
Instead, he stayed on the line.
He didn't rush Mason to stop crying.
Didn't tell him to be strong.
And didn't promise an outcome he couldn't control.
He simply remained available until the boy felt ready to talk.
Then they spent twenty minutes discussing the model airplane.
It was a small conversation.
But afterward, Marcus sat alone in his office and realized that Mason had been asking a question no twelve-year-old should need to ask.
Whether being honest could cost him a parent's love.
Lily gradually began feeling safer around food.
At first, the change was slow.
She still looked toward the pantry before asking for something.
Sometimes she ate quickly, as though a plate might disappear if she waited too long.
Other times she said she wasn't hungry, then returned minutes later asking whether she could have a snack.
Marcus worked with her pediatrician and a child therapist to create predictable, supportive routines.
Meals happened regularly.
Appropriate snacks were available.
And Lily wasn't required to perform good behavior to earn basic food.
The first weekend after Vanessa left, Marcus removed the padlock from the pantry door.
He didn't make Lily watch.
He simply restored ordinary access to the kitchen while keeping household safety arrangements appropriate for a young child.
Then he prepared lunch.
Grilled chicken.
Rice.
And the small pieces of cucumber Lily liked dipping into yogurt.
