For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then Marcus turned toward Mason.

"Is there more?"

The boy nodded.

"A lot."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus, you cannot seriously believe a twelve-year-old's interpretation of private family conversations."

Marcus didn't answer her.

He looked toward the boy.

"Before you show me anything else, I need to take care of Lily."

Mason nodded immediately.

Marcus carried his daughter toward the refrigerator. There were eggs, fruit, bread, yogurt, and other food available outside the locked pantry, so he didn't need to spend time arguing about the key. He took out a yogurt and a banana, then asked Lily whether she'd like something more substantial after she'd had a chance to settle.

The little girl looked toward Vanessa.

Marcus noticed.

"Sweetheart, you can answer me."

Lily whispered.

"Can I really eat it?"

He felt tears gathering.

"Yes."

She looked at the yogurt.

Then toward her stepmother again.

For a moment, Vanessa seemed ready to speak.

Marcus raised his hand.

"Please don't."

His voice remained controlled, but the boundary was unmistakable.

He carried Lily to the breakfast table and sat beside her while she began eating.

She held the spoon carefully.

At first, she took tiny bites.

Then she became more comfortable.

Marcus watched.

He didn't rush her.

Didn't ask her to explain herself while she ate.

And didn't make her feel as though accepting food required proving she'd been mistreated.

After several minutes, Lily looked up.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Am I bad?"

The question struck him harder than anything he'd heard since coming home.

He leaned closer.

"No."

She studied his face.

"But Vanessa says bad girls take food."

Marcus took a slow breath.

"Needing food doesn't make you bad. Asking an adult for food doesn't make you bad either."

Lily looked toward her bowl.

Then whispered.

"I was trying to be good."

He gently brushed a loose curl away from her forehead.

"I know you were."

For several seconds, he sat quietly beside her.

He could hear Vanessa moving around the kitchen behind him.

But he wasn't going to let another argument interrupt Lily's meal.
