Then she turned toward the hallway.

And Marcus realized that the recording Mason showed him might not be the only thing Vanessa had prepared.

The email had arrived at 2:41 p.m.

Thirty-six minutes before Marcus walked through the front door.

It came from a legal office he'd never worked with before.

The subject line read Confidential Family Resolution Proposal.

Marcus opened it while sitting in his home office.

At first, he thought it was a routine notice concerning Vanessa's intention to separate.

Then he reached the second page.

The document alleged that Marcus had neglected his parental responsibilities, left Lily without adequate supervision, and created an unstable home environment through excessive business travel.

It referenced photographs, witness statements, and videos supposedly documenting the girl's distress.

Marcus stared.

The allegations were presented as Vanessa's claims, not as findings by a court or child-protection authority.

But the implications were serious.

The proposal demanded a financial settlement, exclusive use of the marital home for a defined period, and an arrangement that would position Vanessa as Lily's primary daily caregiver while Marcus's parenting practices were reviewed.

The requested payment was enormous.

One million two hundred thousand dollars.

Marcus read the number twice.

Then looked toward the attached supporting summary.

It referred to Lily repeatedly saying her father failed to provide food.

His hands became cold.

He recognized the words.

They were the same false statements Vanessa had tried to make Lily repeat on camera.

The document also referred to Mason as a witness who could corroborate the household conditions.

Marcus felt his heart pounding.

He looked toward the hallway.

Mason was helping Lily with her blocks.

The boy had been terrified to tell the truth.

Yet Vanessa's proposal described him as supporting her allegations.

Marcus opened the attached witness summary.

At the bottom was Mason's name.

Beneath it appeared a digital signature.

Marcus stared.

Then quietly called his attorney.

"There's something else you need to see."

For several seconds, he struggled to speak.

Finally, he said.

"The document says Mason signed a statement against me."

The lawyer asked whether Mason had actually signed anything.

Marcus looked toward the living room.

"I don't think so."

Then he added.

"And if he didn't, somebody used his name."
