Then helped the boy review how to present the project clearly at school.
For nearly an hour, the three of them worked together.
Lily occasionally interrupted with questions that had little to do with engineering.
Mason answered patiently.
Marcus smiled.
The boy who once stood terrified near the staircase was now explaining his work confidently at the dining table.
The same table where Lily had cried beside an empty plate.
Marcus looked toward it.
For a moment, the memory returned.
Then Lily laughed at something Mason said.
And the old image faded.
The table wasn't only the place where something terrible happened.
It was also where the family could create better memories.
Marcus began setting out plates.
Mason helped.
Lily carried napkins.
Then they sat down together.
The food was warm.
The conversation was easy.
And everyone had enough to eat.
After dinner, Mason stayed behind while Lily went to retrieve a board game.
He stood beside Marcus at the kitchen island.
For a moment, he seemed thoughtful.
Then he spoke.
"Dad?"
Marcus looked up.
"Yeah, buddy?"
"I'm glad you came home early that day."
Marcus became still.
He looked toward the dining table.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he nodded.
"Me too."
Mason swallowed.
"I was scared you wouldn't believe me."
Marcus felt a sharp sadness.
He turned toward the boy.
"I'm sorry you had to be scared of that."
Mason looked down.
Then whispered.
"I didn't want Mom to get in trouble."
Marcus nodded.
"I know."
The boy continued.
"But I didn't want Lily to keep crying either."
For a moment, his voice broke.
Marcus put one hand gently against his shoulder.
"You were trying to protect someone you love."
Mason nodded.
Then looked toward the doorway.
Lily was returning with the board game tucked under one arm.
She smiled when she saw them.
"Come on! I want to play!"
Mason laughed softly.
"Okay, okay."
He stepped toward her.
Then stopped.
He turned back toward Marcus.
For a moment, he looked almost embarrassed.
Then said.
"I love you, Dad."
Marcus felt tears gathering.
He smiled.
"I love you too, son."
Mason grinned.
Then hurried into the living room.
Marcus remained beside the kitchen island for several seconds.
