And the grass had been recently cut.

Lily stood beside her mother's headstone.

For several seconds, she remained silent.

Then she placed the flowers gently near the base.

"Hi, Mommy."

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

He stood nearby.

Lily looked at the photograph attached to the memorial.

Then smiled faintly.

"I'm going to kindergarten."

For a moment, she seemed pleased simply to say the words aloud.

Then she continued.

"I can write my whole name now."

Marcus watched.

His daughter wasn't looking for an answer.

She was sharing something important with the mother she missed.

After a while, Lily turned toward him.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Did Mommy know Mason?"

Marcus shook his head gently.

"No. Mason became part of our lives later."

Lily looked thoughtful.

Then said.

"I think she would've liked him."

Marcus smiled.

"I think so too."

For several seconds, they stood quietly.

Then Lily asked another question.

"Does Mommy know I'm okay now?"

Marcus took a slow breath.

He didn't pretend to know exactly what happened after death.

Instead, he answered in a way that honored what he knew about her mother.

"Your mommy loved you very much. And if she could see how brave and kind you're becoming, she'd be proud."

Lily smiled.

Then reached for his hand.

They remained beside the flowers for several minutes.

And Marcus remembered the promise he'd made during his wife's final days.

To protect their daughter.

To let her grow.

And to make sure she always knew she was loved.

He hadn't kept that promise perfectly.

But he was keeping it now.

The most important change happened on an ordinary Thursday evening.

Marcus was preparing dinner when Lily entered the kitchen carrying a small stuffed rabbit.

She looked up at him.

"Daddy, I'm hungry."

The words were simple.

Five syllables.

The kind of sentence children said in kitchens every day.

Marcus turned from the stove.

He smiled.

"Okay, sweetheart. Dinner's almost ready. Would you like some apple slices while we finish?"

Lily nodded.

"Yes, please."

He washed an apple, prepared it for her, and placed it in a small bowl.

She climbed onto her chair.

Then began eating.
