When Lily finished, Marcus asked Mason to sit with her in the living room while he made several calls.

He didn't ask the boy to supervise a dangerous situation or take responsibility for his sister's safety. He simply wanted the children together somewhere comfortable while he arranged for another trusted adult to come to the house.

His first call was to his older sister.

She lived fifteen minutes away and had been a constant presence in Lily's life since the girl's mother died.

Marcus explained that he'd discovered serious concerns involving Vanessa's treatment of the children and needed his sister to come immediately.

Her voice changed.

"Are they safe right now?"

"Yes. I'm with them."

"Is anyone hurt?"

"No obvious injuries. But Lily hasn't been getting meals properly, and Mason has evidence of other things."

His sister didn't hesitate.

"I'm coming."

Marcus thanked her.

Then he contacted Lily's pediatrician's office to explain the concern about missed meals and ongoing emotional distress. He was advised on obtaining prompt medical assessment and what symptoms would require urgent care.

He arranged an appointment.

After that, he contacted the appropriate child-protection reporting service to describe what he'd observed and ask for guidance.

He didn't want the matter handled solely as a marital disagreement.

Lily was five.

Mason was twelve.

And both children had described being frightened in their own home.

The situation needed attention independent of his relationship with Vanessa.

When he finished the calls, he returned to the kitchen.

Vanessa stood with her arms folded.

"You called your sister?"

"Yes."

Her expression darkened.

"You're involving the entire family in something you don't understand."

Marcus looked at her.

"I understand that Lily was hungry, the food was locked away, and Mason recorded you telling her to make false statements about me."

Vanessa shook her head.

"You're twisting everything."

He remained calm.

"Then we'll preserve the full recordings and let the appropriate professionals examine what happened."

For a moment, she stared at him.

Then she glanced toward the living room.

"Give me Mason's phone."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Her face reddened.

"He's my son."

"I know."

"Then I have a right to his phone."

Marcus looked toward the child sitting on the sofa beside Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.
