Then activated the monitored security system's emergency assistance feature and confirmed the details when the monitoring operator contacted me.

Three men were attempting to take a vehicle from my private driveway.

One was carrying equipment to immobilize it.

They appeared to be acting on instructions from an HOA official.

The operator relayed the information to county dispatch.

I put the phone away.

Opened the front door.

And stepped onto my porch.

“Gentlemen,” I said, “step away from the vehicle.”

That was the moment Sandra Holt finally crossed from making dubious threats into an encounter that would be documented by more than HOA paperwork.

By the time the sheriff's cruiser stopped in front of my house, the yellow wheel clamp was attached to the Porsche.

The man who installed it had been tightening the final mechanism when the emergency lights appeared.

Now he was kneeling beside the tire, frozen in place.

The guard carrying the towing hook stood near the rear bumper.

Dwayne Kessler, the heavyset leader who had shoved me, looked from my federal badge to the approaching deputies as though he were trying to decide which problem was worse.

Sandra Holt recovered first.

She straightened her white blazer, tucked a loose strand of blonde hair behind her ear, and walked toward the cruiser with the confident expression of a woman who expected the officers to congratulate her.

“Thank goodness,” she announced. “I was just about to call you.”

The first deputy stepped out.

She was a Latina woman in her late thirties with dark hair pulled into a neat bun. Her uniform was dark green, and her nameplate read MORALES.

The second was a tall white man named BISHOP, perhaps forty, with a closely trimmed beard and an observant expression.

Both wore body cameras.

Deputy Morales looked toward the Porsche.

Then the wheel clamp.

Then the men in black uniforms.

Finally, she turned toward Sandra.

“Ma'am, we received a report of a possible unauthorized vehicle removal.”

Sandra smiled.

“It's not unauthorized. I'm the HOA vice president.”

Morales nodded.

“Okay.”

She looked toward me.

“Sir, are you the person who requested assistance?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Marcus Vale.”

“Do you live here?”

“Yes. I own the property.”

Kessler stepped forward.

“Officer, we're conducting an official impound.”

Deputy Bishop looked toward the man's vest.

“Official through which agency?”

Kessler touched his badge.

“HOA Security Enforcement.”

Bishop studied the shield.
