The homeowner was difficult.
The security team had authority.
The HOA rules were clear.
The police simply didn't understand the situation.
But she'd just acknowledged directing the operation herself.
That statement would matter later.
When the officers finished the immediate interviews, the clamp was removed under their supervision.
Jeff Bell unlocked the device carefully.
Then stepped backward.
I examined the wheel.
The clamp had left marks on part of the rim.
The towing hook had also contacted a section of the rear bumper.
The damage wasn't catastrophic.
But it wasn't imaginary either.
I photographed it before moving the vehicle.
Then Morales approached.
“Mr. Vale, we're going to complete the report and make sure the relevant material is reviewed.”
I nodded.
“Thank you.”
She glanced toward the badge at my belt.
“Deputy Marshal?”
“Yes.”
“Were you acting in any official capacity during this incident?”
“No. I was at home. This is my personal vehicle.”
She nodded.
“Understood.”
I appreciated the question.
My federal credentials didn't transform a private property dispute into an automatic federal case.
I was a homeowner who had requested assistance.
That was enough.
Morales continued.
“We'll handle the state-law issues according to the evidence and applicable procedures.”
“Good.”
She looked toward the Porsche.
“For now, I'd recommend you don't move the car until you've documented all visible damage and coordinated any necessary inspection.”
I nodded.
“Already doing that.”
Her expression softened slightly.
Then she said, “Nice car, by the way.”
For the first time that afternoon, I laughed.
“Thanks.”
She smiled.
Then returned to the cruiser.
Sandra remained near the sidewalk.
She was speaking rapidly into her phone.
Her beautiful white pantsuit looked almost ridiculous beside the men she'd brought into my driveway.
The men had stopped working.
The utility truck was no longer going anywhere with my Porsche.
And Sandra no longer looked as though she controlled the situation.
She looked frightened.
Not yet defeated.
But frightened.
When she finally turned toward me, her expression was filled with hatred.
“You've embarrassed this entire community.”
I looked toward the houses around us.
Several neighbors were watching from their porches.
One had been recording on a phone.
Another was standing beside a mailbox.
I took a slow breath.
“No, Sandra.”
She stared.
I continued.
“You brought men to take my car. You had one of them shove me when I objected. That's what the neighbors saw.”
