“There are rules for disputes like this. We preserve what happened, ask for help when we need it, and let the appropriate people decide what consequences are justified.”

Eli stared at the table.

Then whispered, “That sounds slow.”

I laughed.

“It is.”

He looked up.

“Does it work?”

I considered the question.

“Not always perfectly. But it's better than making everything worse because you're angry.”

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

Hannah smiled.

And for the first time that evening, the tension eased.

But when I returned home later, another envelope was waiting.

This one came from the HOA's legal department.

The letter accused me of interfering with authorized association enforcement and creating a public disturbance.

It demanded that I remove online comments criticizing Sandra and stop displaying my federal credentials during private neighborhood disputes.

I stared.

I hadn't posted the video.

Hadn't made public allegations.

And hadn't threatened anyone with my badge.

But Sandra had already begun transforming the incident into a story about a federal officer abusing his position against innocent HOA volunteers.

I scanned the letter.

Sent it to Priya.

Then went to bed.

The following morning, she called.

“Marcus, I need you to understand something.”

I sat upright.

“What?”

“The association's letter doesn't identify the legal basis for the attempted vehicle removal. It also doesn't address the authorization document or the damage to your Porsche.”

I nodded.

“So?”

“So I suspect we're dealing with a defensive response rather than a genuine effort to resolve the dispute.”

I looked toward the window.

“That sounds right.”

She continued.

“But don't make assumptions about who drafted it. We need to establish what the board actually authorized.”

I took a breath.

“Okay.”

Then she added something that made me sit straighter.

“I spoke with Walter Mays's attorney.”

“What did he say?”

“Walter says he never approved the impound.”

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked, “Are you sure?”

Priya answered carefully.

“He has provided a written statement saying he did not sign or authorize the specific document presented at your driveway.”

I stared at the wall.

The signature.

The official-looking notice.

Sandra holding it up as though it were a court order.

Priya continued.

“His attorney is requesting an independent review of how the document was created.”

I took a slow breath.

“Then somebody used his name.”

“That's what needs to be established.”
