But he could not identify a recorded motion specifically authorizing Stonebridge to remove my Porsche from my driveway.

Nor could he identify a decision permitting enforcement staff to use physical force against a homeowner.

A resident raised her hand.

“Was there any rule prohibiting his car?”

Felicia looked toward the governing documents.

“The audit has not identified a properly adopted restriction that would support the specific luxury-vehicle appearance notices presented in this case.”

Someone laughed softly.

Another resident shook his head.

Sandra looked furious.

Then a man near the front stood.

He was Luis Hernandez.

He held a folder containing invoices.

“What about my minivan?”

Walter turned toward him.

Luis took a breath.

“My wife needed that van to take our children to school. Stonebridge removed it while we were trying to challenge a notice.”

He looked toward Sandra.

“We paid almost four thousand dollars.”

His wife, Marisol, sat beside him.

She was crying quietly.

Luis continued.

“We didn't have that money. We borrowed from family.”

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Then he asked something that made Sandra's expression change.

“Did any of that money go to people connected with the board?”

Felicia looked toward Margaret.

The attorney answered.

“The independent review is examining the flow of payments, including any related-party transactions. It would be premature to assign all amounts to particular individuals before that work is completed.”

Luis nodded slowly.

Then looked toward the board.

“I want somebody to explain where our money went.”

Walter took a breath.

“You deserve an answer supported by the records.”

For the first time, I saw the association president looking less like a man who wanted the meeting to end and more like somebody beginning to understand his responsibilities.

He had allowed Sandra too much discretion.

He had trusted her.

And now the consequences were reaching families who had depended upon the board to enforce rules fairly.

The meeting continued.

Priya was invited to provide a short statement concerning my experience.

She did.

Calmly.

Without calling anyone a criminal.

She explained the disputed fines, the request for a hearing, the attempt to remove the Porsche, and the absence of documentation establishing authority for that action.

She also explained that the relevant video had been preserved and provided through appropriate channels.

Sandra interrupted.

“He flashed a federal badge at community volunteers!”

Priya turned toward her.
