“ID. NOW. People like you don't belong in this park.”

The police officer's voice cracked across the peaceful afternoon as he pointed an accusing finger inches from the Black woman's face. He was tall, muscular, and barely thirty-two, with closely cropped brown hair, a black uniform stretched tightly across his shoulders, and a gold-and-blue police patch gleaming beneath the Georgia sunlight.

The woman didn't move.

She remained seated on a wooden bench beneath an enormous oak tree, an open book resting across her lap. Her exceptionally dark ebony skin contrasted beautifully with the dusty-rose hijab wrapped around her head and shoulders. She wore a tailored sage-green blazer over an ivory blouse, elegant black trousers, and polished black loafers. A structured leather handbag rested beside her on the bench.

She was thirty-six years old, composed, strikingly beautiful, and apparently alone.

At least, that was what the officer believed.

“Didn't you hear me?” he snapped, leaning closer. “I said give me your identification.”

The woman slowly lifted her eyes.

“I'm reading a book, Officer. What law have I broken?”

His expression hardened.

“You don't ask the questions. I do.”

“Then ask me a lawful one.”

A jogger passing along the nearby pathway slowed.

The officer noticed and immediately straightened his shoulders, trying to make the confrontation appear official.

“We've had complaints about suspicious individuals hanging around this neighborhood.”

The woman glanced toward the open grassy field, where families were walking dogs and children were playing near a fountain.

“Suspicious individuals?”

“That's right.”

“What behavior made me suspicious?”

The officer's jaw tightened.

He had expected fear.

He had expected an apology, perhaps an embarrassed explanation about why she was sitting there.

Instead, the woman looked directly into his eyes.

She showed no sign of being intimidated.

That irritated him more than anything.

“Look, lady. This is an upscale residential community. People around here don't appreciate strangers hanging around.”

The woman closed her book carefully, keeping one finger between the pages.

“It's a public park.”

The officer laughed.

“Not everybody understands what that means.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“Explain it to me.”

His face reddened.

“I don't have to explain anything.”
