For several seconds, he stared at her.
Then he gave the information.
She wrote it down.
The captain looked toward the younger officer.
โYou and I are going to have a conversation about insubordination.โ
The junior officer lowered his eyes.
But the investigator spoke again.
โCaptain, any retaliation against a witness or officer for cooperating with a lawful investigation would raise additional concerns.โ
The captain turned sharply.
โAre you threatening me?โ
She shook her head.
โI'm making sure my statement is clear.โ
He stared at her.
She continued.
โYou should also preserve the dispatch communications, camera metadata, and incident records related to today's encounter.โ
The captain looked toward the witnesses.
Then back at her.
His lips tightened.
For a moment, the investigator thought he might say something else.
Instead, he turned and walked toward his vehicle.
The older patrol officer followed.
The junior officer remained near the path.
He looked toward the investigator.
His expression carried a mixture of relief and dread.
Then he spoke quietly.
โI'm sorry.โ
She studied him.
โFor what?โ
He looked down.
โFor not saying something sooner.โ
The investigator considered her answer.
Then spoke carefully.
โYou can't change the stops you already participated in.โ
He nodded.
โI know.โ
โBut you can tell the truth about them and make different decisions going forward.โ
His eyes filled.
He looked toward his camera.
Then toward the patrol vehicles.
He nodded.
โYes, ma'am.โ
The investigator picked up her book.
The jogger slowly lowered his phone.
Several bystanders remained near the fountain, whispering about what they'd witnessed.
The park looked almost exactly as it had an hour earlier.
The trees.
The pond.
The sunlit pathways.
The children playing.
Yet something important had changed.
For the first time, the unofficial park contact protocol had been challenged while an officer's camera remained active.
And the captain himself had been recorded ordering that camera turned off.
The investigator slipped her book into her handbag.
Then looked toward the bench.
She thought about the retired teacher.
The woman who had stopped visiting because she was afraid.
She touched the wooden slats.
Then whispered, โYou were right.โ
Her colleague approached.
He kept his voice low.
โAre you okay?โ
She nodded.
