The supervisor studied her for another moment.

Then said, β€œMake sure the team knows where you'll be.”

She agreed.

There were safety considerations.

The department had already been associated with troubling complaints.

The investigator's photograph had appeared in a private monitoring system.

And the junior officer believed the patrol captain was interested in identifying her.

She did not intend to take unnecessary risks.

But she also refused to treat a public park as forbidden ground simply because someone might dislike her presence.

The visit was planned carefully.

A colleague would be nearby in a public area, observing the surroundings without interfering.

Another team member would remain available by phone.

The investigator would carry her federal credentials.

She would follow applicable recording and safety procedures.

And she would not attempt to provoke a confrontation.

She would sit on a bench.

Read a book.

And observe.

The afternoon was bright and warm.

A light breeze moved through the oak trees.

Children played near the fountain.

A man walked a golden retriever along the pathway.

Two older women sat beside the pond discussing gardening.

The investigator arrived in a modest dark sedan.

She parked legally near the public entrance.

Then stepped outside.

Her sage-green blazer was neatly tailored.

Her ivory blouse was pressed.

Her dusty-rose hijab framed her face and draped softly across her shoulders.

She carried a structured black handbag and the book from the retired teacher.

As she walked toward the bench, she noticed one of the security cameras mounted near the pathway.

The camera's field of view covered part of the entrance and the surrounding walkway.

She made a mental note.

Then continued.

The bench stood beneath an enormous oak tree.

Its wooden slats were warm from the afternoon sun.

A small plaque identified the bench as a donation from a local family.

The pond beyond it reflected the blue sky.

She sat down.

Then opened the book.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

She read two pages.

Then another.

A little girl passed with her father.

A cyclist rode along the designated path.

The investigator listened to the sounds of the park.

Birds.

Footsteps.

Children laughing.

The distant hum of traffic.
