One asked where he'd gotten the ball.
He answered that it belonged to him.
The officer asked whether he lived nearby.
He said he lived in the apartment complex across the road.
The officer looked toward the buildings.
Then asked why he wasn't using the park closer to his own neighborhood.
The boy explained that this was the closest public park to his school.
The officer demanded identification.
The boy said he didn't have a driver's license.
He had a school identification card in his backpack.
When he reached toward the bag, one officer shouted at him to keep his hands visible.
He froze.
The other officer ordered him to sit on the curb.
He obeyed.
For twenty minutes, he remained there while the officers questioned him.
Eventually, they let him leave without a citation or charge.
The official report described the encounter as a brief consensual conversation.
The boy looked toward the investigator.
βDoes sitting on the curb while somebody threatens to handcuff you sound consensual?β
His mother closed her eyes.
The investigator answered carefully.
βThe circumstances matter. That's why we're reviewing what happened.β
The boy looked down.
Then whispered, βI didn't do anything.β
His mother placed a hand on his shoulder.
The investigator waited.
After a moment, the teenager continued.
βI used to play basketball there every weekend.β
He looked toward his shoes.
βNow I take the long way home.β
The investigator wrote it down.
Then asked whether anyone witnessed the encounter.
The boy nodded.
βA woman walking her dog.β
He described her.
The investigator added the information to her notes.
The boy hesitated.
Then asked, βAre the police going to get mad because I talked to you?β
The question struck her.
She looked directly at him.
βYou have the right to report what happened. If anyone threatens or retaliates against you because you cooperated, tell your mother and your attorney immediately so it can be addressed.β
The boy nodded.
But he didn't look reassured.
He had learned that knowing your rights did not always prevent someone from frightening you.
The investigator understood.
Before leaving, she thanked him for speaking.
He looked surprised.
βFor what?β
