The investigator reached for her notebook.
Then asked gently, “What would you like to happen?”
The teacher considered the question.
Then answered.
“I'd like them to stop.”
Her voice trembled.
“Not just to me.”
She looked toward the investigator.
“To everybody.”
The investigator nodded.
“I understand.”
The teacher studied her.
Then asked something unexpected.
“Do you ever get tired?”
The investigator looked surprised.
“Of what?”
“Of hearing stories like mine.”
For several seconds, she didn't answer.
Then she spoke honestly.
“Yes.”
The teacher nodded.
The investigator continued.
“But being tired doesn't change what the evidence requires us to examine.”
The older woman's expression softened.
Then she smiled.
“Good.”
She reached across the table.
“And don't let anyone make you feel you're asking for too much.”
The investigator looked toward her.
The teacher continued.
“Sometimes the people with power act as though basic respect is a favor.”
She shook her head.
“It isn't.”
The investigator smiled faintly.
“No.”
She looked down at the notebook.
“It isn't.”
When she left the house, she carried copies of the teacher's notes and the names of several possible witnesses.
She also carried a book.
The teacher had lent it to her.
A Place to Belong.
It was a collection of essays about home, public space, and the meaning of community.
The teacher said she'd been reading it when the officer first approached her.
The investigator promised to return it.
The older woman smiled.
“Take your time.”
Then she added, “Perhaps you can finish it on that bench.”
The investigator looked surprised.
The teacher continued.
“The one near the pond.”
She smiled sadly.
“It's the best place to read.”
At the time, the investigator had no idea that she would eventually sit on that exact bench while the same department repeated the conduct described in the woman's notebook.
And she certainly didn't know that the most important evidence would arrive from inside the police department itself.
The first internal witness contacted the investigator eleven days after her interview with the retired teacher.
The message arrived through a confidential reporting channel established for the federal review.
It contained only a few sentences.
