“Shut this damn party down! I don't need your permission!”
The police officer's furious shout shattered the joyful sounds of a little girl's seventh birthday party as he grabbed the Black father's gray T-shirt with both hands and violently shoved him backward against a tall wooden privacy fence. The impact rattled the boards. Pink balloons trembled above a nearby picnic table, and a little girl wearing a sparkling birthday crown dropped her cupcake when she saw her father being attacked.
“Daddy!”
Her scream cut through the backyard.

The father was thirty-nine years old, exceptionally handsome, with rich, deep-brown skin, a closely faded haircut, a neatly trimmed beard, and the broad shoulders of a man who had spent years keeping himself physically strong. His tight light-gray athletic T-shirt stretched across his muscular chest and powerful arms, while fitted dark-blue jeans and black sneakers completed his casual weekend clothing.
His name was Marcus Bennett.
He was a former Army veteran, a hardworking single father, and the owner of the beautiful two-story suburban home where he was supposed to be celebrating the happiest day of his daughter's year.
Instead, a white police officer was pressing him against his own backyard fence.
The officer was thirty-three, muscular, with short brown hair, an arrogant expression, and a fitted black police uniform bearing a prominent gold badge. His name was Officer Travis Cole, and he had entered the backyard through a closed wooden gate after receiving what he claimed was an urgent noise complaint.
He had no warrant.
He had observed no emergency.
And until he shoved Marcus, nobody at the party had threatened him.
“Get your hands off me!” Marcus demanded, bracing his feet against the grass.
Officer Cole tightened his grip.
“You don't tell me what to do on a police call!”
“This is my private property!”
Cole leaned forward, his face inches from Marcus's.
“And I'm the police!”
Then he did something that would eventually cost him far more than his badge.
He released Marcus's shirt with one hand, drew back his arm, and slapped him hard across the left cheek.
The sound was unmistakable.
Several adults gasped.
A little boy standing near the birthday table began crying.
