The birthday music was off.

Several guests had left.

A few children were still crying.

The cake remained untouched.

Pink decorations fluttered along the fence.

Marcus stood in the middle of his yard feeling as though the entire afternoon had been stolen.

His mother approached.

She carried the fallen princess crown.

“Son.”

He looked toward her.

She gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Come inside.”

He shook his head.

“I should clean this up.”

“Marcus.”

He looked at her.

Her eyes filled.

“The decorations can wait.”

For a moment, he resisted.

He had spent years responding to grief by finding something useful to do.

After his wife's death, he washed dishes, repaired fences, organized cabinets, and worked until exhaustion forced him to stop.

Now he wanted to do the same thing.

Fix the chairs.

Straighten the table.

Save the party.

Pretend the day could still be made normal.

But his mother wasn't going to let him hide behind another chore.

She opened her arms.

Marcus stared.

Then the muscular man who had remained composed while being attacked finally began crying.

He stepped forward.

His mother held him.

For several seconds, he cried against her shoulder.

“I tried, Mom.”

She gently rubbed his back.

“I know.”

“I just wanted her to have a good birthday.”

His voice broke.

“I promised.”

His mother closed her eyes.

She understood whom he meant.

She had been in the hospital during those final weeks.

She had heard her daughter-in-law ask Marcus to make room for joy.

Now she held her son while he mourned the beautiful afternoon that had turned into fear.

After a while, she whispered, “Your promise isn't finished because one afternoon went wrong.”

Marcus pulled back.

His eyes were red.

She looked toward the house.

“Your daughter still needs you to be her daddy tonight.”

He nodded.

Then his mother smiled gently.

“And she still deserves some birthday cake.”

That evening, after the investigators completed the necessary initial work and the guests had gone home, Marcus brought the cake inside.

It had survived untouched beneath its protective cover.

He placed it on the kitchen table.
