The guard became aggressive.

But when Marcus began recording, the man released the backpack.

The teenager hurried away.

Marcus checked that he was safe, then reported the encounter.

What Marcus didn't realize until later was that the security company was seeking a lucrative municipal contract to provide expanded neighborhood patrol services. Complaints involving harassment or unauthorized detentions could threaten the company's approval.

The businessman contacted Marcus twice, asking him to withdraw his statement.

Marcus refused.

Now the man was calling again.

Marcus stepped away from the decorations and answered.

“What do you want?”

The businessman's voice was polished and friendly.

“Good morning, Marcus. I hope I'm not interrupting anything important.”

Marcus looked toward the birthday cake.

“You are.”

The man chuckled.

“Then I'll be quick. I have a final proposal.”

“I'm not interested.”

“You haven't heard the amount.”

“I don't need to.”

“Seventy-five thousand dollars.”

Marcus became still.

The businessman continued.

“Seventy-five thousand dollars for a simple written clarification. You misunderstood what happened with that young man. Our guard was protecting the community.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“I watched him grab a teenager who was walking home.”

The businessman sighed.

“People make mistakes.”

“Then let your company answer for its mistake.”

There was a pause.

Then the man's voice changed.

“You know, Marcus, your family has already been through enough.”

Marcus felt cold.

“What did you say?”

The businessman spoke slowly.

“You're raising a daughter alone. You've got a beautiful house. A good life. Why create trouble over some kid you barely know?”

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Because that boy deserved to get home without being threatened.”

The businessman laughed bitterly.

“Always the hero.”

Marcus looked toward the yard.

His daughter appeared at the patio door wearing a pink dress, her grandmother holding her hand.

He softened his expression and waved.

She waved back.

Then he turned away from her.

“Don't call me again.”

The businessman's voice became quiet.

“Think carefully. It would be a shame if something ruined your daughter's birthday.”

Marcus stopped breathing for half a second.

“What exactly are you threatening?”

The man laughed.

“I'm wishing your daughter a happy birthday.”

Then the call ended.
