Marcus stepped sideways.
“Officer, please stop.”
Cole pushed the gate open.
Marcus followed.
“There's no emergency in there. You're not invited inside the yard.”
The officer ignored him.
Then he saw the birthday decorations.
The tables.
The balloons.
The children.
For an instant, even Cole appeared to recognize how ordinary the scene was.
But he had already committed himself to confrontation.
He marched onto the grass.
“Everybody listen up! Party's over!”
The music stopped.
Children turned.
Parents stared.
Marcus followed him.
“Officer, what are you doing?”
Cole spun around.
“I told you to shut it down!”
Marcus raised both hands.
“It's a birthday party. You're frightening the children.”
Cole stepped into his space.
“Back up!”
Marcus remained still.
“I'm standing in my own yard.”
Then the officer grabbed his shirt.
And the afternoon that was supposed to fulfill a dying mother's promise became the scene of an assault that no child should have had to witness.
The slap echoed across the backyard.
Marcus's daughter screamed.
His mother hurried toward the children, wrapping her arms around the birthday girl while several other parents pulled their children away from the confrontation.
Marcus shoved the officer backward only when Cole seized him again, using both open hands to create distance.
Then he immediately stepped back.
“Don't touch me again!”
Officer Cole stumbled, recovered his balance, and reached toward his handcuffs.
“You just assaulted an officer!”
Marcus held his palms out.
“You hit me first! I'm not fighting you!”
Cole moved forward.
And that was when the woman in pink stepped between them.
“That's enough.”
The officer glared at her.
“Get out of my way.”
She didn't move.
“Step away from him.”
Cole sneered.
“Ma'am, you need to mind your business.”
She raised her phone.
“I'm making this my business.”
Then she identified herself.
The officer's face changed instantly.
At first, he appeared skeptical.
Then she opened her credentials.
His confident posture collapsed.
The woman looked at Marcus's reddening cheek, then toward his crying daughter.
When she spoke again, her voice was controlled but unmistakably furious.
“Officer Cole, move away from this family. Now.”
He obeyed.
She looked toward the badge on his chest.
