Marcus's head turned from the impact, and for one terrifying second, everything inside him demanded that he strike back.

His jaw clenched.

His hands tightened.

His chest rose with one sharp breath.

But then he heard his daughter crying.

“Daddy, please!”

He turned his head toward the little girl.

She stood beside the birthday cake in a beautiful pink princess dress, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her tiny hands were shaking, and the silver crown she'd been wearing had slipped sideways.

Marcus looked back at the officer.

His voice trembled with restrained fury.

“You just hit me in front of my daughter.”

Cole sneered.

“You should've listened.”

Then the officer grabbed Marcus's shirt again and lunged toward him.

Marcus instinctively shoved him away with both open hands, creating enough distance to prevent another blow.

Cole stumbled backward across the grass.

He recovered his balance, his face flushing with rage.

“That's assault on a police officer!”

Marcus immediately raised both hands.

“Stay away from me! I'm not fighting you!”

Cole reached toward his handcuffs.

“Oh, you're going to jail now.”

Behind them, the birthday party had become a scene of frightened children, overturned chairs, and adults struggling to understand how a peaceful celebration had turned violent.

But one woman had not moved.

She stood several feet behind the confrontation, beside a table covered with birthday decorations.

She was a white American woman in her late forties, with shoulder-length chestnut-brown hair, a strong, intelligent face, and an ordinary bright-pink blouse tucked into fitted blue jeans.

She held a red plastic party cup in one hand and a smartphone in the other.

Her expression had changed from disbelief to cold anger.

The officer barely noticed her.

To him, she was just another middle-aged guest.

Another person who would probably become frightened when he raised his voice.

He had no idea that she was the newly appointed police chief of his own department.

He had never met her in person.

And he had absolutely no idea that she had recorded the entire confrontation.

As Cole stepped toward Marcus with his handcuffs raised, the woman slowly set down her red cup.

Then she walked directly between them.
