Now his hands were shaking.

Marcus opened the door.

“What's wrong?”

The teenager tried to answer.

Then began crying.

Marcus stepped aside.

“Come in.”

The boy entered.

He sat at the kitchen table while Marcus brought him water.

For several minutes, he struggled to speak.

Then he explained that two private security guards had stopped him beside a neighborhood walking trail.

They demanded to know where he lived.

He answered.

They accused him of lying.

When he tried to leave, one grabbed his backpack strap.

The other threatened to call police and have him arrested for trespassing.

The boy became frightened.

He began reaching for his phone to call his mother.

One guard knocked the device from his hand.

Then told him to stop acting suspiciously.

Eventually, another adult appeared.

The guards released him.

But not before warning him that he should avoid the area in the future.

Marcus listened carefully.

Then asked whether the boy was hurt.

He shook his head.

“Not bad.”

Marcus looked toward his wrist.

A faint red mark was visible.

He took a breath.

“Did they explain what property they thought you were trespassing on?”

The boy shook his head.

“No.”

“Did they accuse you of committing a specific crime?”

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

Then asked whether the boy's mother knew what happened.

The teenager looked down.

“She's at work.”

Marcus reached for his phone.

“Then we're going to call her.”

The boy immediately became frightened.

“Am I in trouble?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He placed a hand gently on the boy's shoulder.

“You came here because something scared you. That's not something you need to hide.”

The teenager's eyes filled.

He looked down.

Then whispered, “They kept asking why I was there.”

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

The boy continued.

“Like I wasn't allowed to walk home.”

For several seconds, Marcus said nothing.

Then he answered quietly.

“You have the right to use public sidewalks and public paths. Nobody should make you feel like being there is a crime.”

They called the boy's mother.

She left work early.

When she arrived, she hugged her son so tightly he could barely speak.
