He heard children laughing.

He heard music.

He saw pink balloons over the fence.

None of it suggested immediate danger.

But he continued.

He pushed the gate open.

Stepped inside.

And marched toward Marcus.

The father was carrying a tray of cupcakes.

He turned when he heard the gate.

“Can I help you, Officer?”

Cole didn't greet him.

“Turn that music off.”

Marcus looked toward the speaker.

It was playing a children's birthday song at a moderate volume.

He turned back.

“Is there a problem?”

Cole stepped closer.

“Noise complaint.”

Marcus nodded.

“Okay. I can lower it.”

That should have been the beginning of a simple conversation.

Instead, Cole pointed toward the party.

“I want this whole thing shut down.”

Marcus stared.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

Marcus looked toward the children.

Then back at the officer.

“Sir, this is my daughter's birthday. There's no disturbance here.”

Cole's face tightened.

“Are you arguing?”

Marcus lowered the cupcake tray onto a nearby table.

“No. I'm asking why you entered my backyard without speaking to me at the gate.”

Cole took another step.

“Don't start that legal nonsense.”

Marcus's expression changed.

He glanced toward the children.

Then spoke carefully.

“Officer, please step back toward the gate. We can discuss your complaint away from the kids.”

Cole laughed.

“I'm not going anywhere.”

Marcus kept his hands visible.

“You're frightening them.”

The officer leaned closer.

“Then you should've taught them to respect the police.”

Marcus stared.

He felt anger rising.

But he also knew that losing control could put his daughter at risk.

So he spoke slowly.

“I'm willing to lower the music. I'm not agreeing to end her birthday party without a lawful reason.”

Cole's jaw tightened.

“You people always have an excuse.”

The words hit Marcus like a slap before the physical blow ever came.

He looked directly into the officer's eyes.

“What do you mean by ‘you people’?”

Cole moved closer.

“Don't make this difficult.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Officer, I'm asking you to leave my yard.”

The policeman's expression changed.

He reached forward.

Grabbed Marcus's shirt.

And shoved him violently against the wooden fence.

The cupcake tray fell.

Children screamed.

The woman in pink turned.
