His daughter sat beside her grandmother, wearing pajamas and holding the faded pink blanket her mother had made years earlier.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus carefully arranged the seven candles.

Then he knelt beside her.

“Princess?”

She looked up.

“Yeah, Daddy?”

“Would you like to make your birthday wish?”

She stared at the cake.

Then looked toward his face.

“Can I wish for something big?”

He smiled sadly.

“Of course.”

She hesitated.

Then whispered, “I want you to be safe.”

Marcus felt tears rising again.

He reached for her hand.

“Sweetheart, what happened today was wrong. But you didn't cause it, and you didn't have to fix it.”

She looked down.

“Was the music too loud?”

“No.”

“Was it because I was laughing?”

Marcus's heart broke.

He moved closer.

“Listen to me. You are allowed to laugh. You are allowed to celebrate your birthday. You're allowed to be happy in your own backyard.”

She looked up.

His voice trembled.

“What that officer did was his decision. Not yours.”

The little girl began crying.

Marcus embraced her.

For a long time, they sat together.

Then she pulled back.

“Can you still sing?”

He smiled through tears.

“Of course.”

His mother lit the candles.

The kitchen lights dimmed.

And Marcus began singing Happy Birthday in a voice that trembled so badly he could barely finish.

His mother joined him.

His daughter watched the candle flames.

Then she closed her eyes.

She made her wish.

And blew them out.

Marcus kissed the top of her head.

The party hadn't been the celebration he planned.

But as his daughter leaned against him, holding her mother's pink blanket, he realized something important.

The officer had frightened them.

He had ruined the afternoon.

But he had not taken away the love inside the house.

That still belonged to the family.

And Marcus intended to protect it.

The first major discovery came the next morning.

Marcus had barely slept when his attorney called.

The footage from his backyard cameras was clear.

One camera captured Officer Cole pushing through the closed gate despite Marcus's objections. A second showed the officer grabbing Marcus's shirt and slamming him against the wooden fence. The view from the patio recorded the slap, the defensive shove, and the moment Marcus raised his hands to show he wasn't fighting.
