He had written it down.
“Black woman checking car doors.”
The general stared.
“My car has one driver's door.”
“Yes.”
“I opened it with the key.”
“Yes.”
“Any other car touched?”
“No.”
The lieutenant looked embarrassed despite not being responsible for the call.
The general asked:
“What else?”
“He said you appeared nervous.”
She almost laughed.
The colonel did.
Quietly.
The general looked at him.
He straightened.
The lieutenant continued.
“He said the vehicle might be stolen.”
“Because?”
“He did not provide a reason.”
The general looked toward the store again.
Her mother had once told her that prejudice often hid behind verbs.
Lurking.
Loitering.
Watching.
Checking.
Acting suspicious.
Words flexible enough to turn existence into behavior.
The lieutenant said:
“I need to interview the caller.”
“Of course.”
The general picked up the fuel nozzle.
Everyone stared.
The colonel blinked.
“Ma'am?”
“I still need gas.”
The lieutenant almost smiled.
The pump had canceled the transaction after inactivity.
She inserted the card again.
The colonel said:
“We have fuel in the convoy.”
She looked at him.
“This is already authorized.”
“Ma'am.”
“Colonel.”
He surrendered.
The general began fueling.
A woman near pump three had watched almost the entire encounter.
She finally approached cautiously.
“Excuse me.”
The colonel moved instinctively between them.
The general touched his arm.
“It's okay.”
The woman stopped several feet away.
“I recorded part of it.”
The general nodded.
“Please give the footage to the lieutenant.”
“I can send it.”
“Thank you.”
The woman looked nervous.
Then:
“I should have said something sooner.”
The general studied her.
“What would you have said?”
“That you weren't doing anything.”
The general nodded.
“You're saying it now.”
The woman looked toward the officer's vehicle.
“I was afraid he'd turn on me.”
The general understood.
“That's useful information too.”
The lieutenant took her statement.
The man with the pickup provided another.
He had arrived just after the general.
He confirmed she had not touched any vehicle except her own.
Station cameras confirmed all of it.
