Pain shot into her shoulder.

Her handbag slipped from her elbow and fell beside the front tire.

“Sir.”

The younger officer approached again.

The first officer snapped:

“Back me up.”

The younger man stopped.

Those three words trapped him more effectively than any command.

Back me up.

Not assess.

Not observe.

Not ask what happened.

Back me up.

The first officer pushed the woman toward the SUV.

Her palm struck the tinted window.

One heel slid on the concrete.

She caught herself.

The officer pressed her shoulder forward.

“Feet apart.”

She turned her face enough to speak.

“You are using force against a compliant person.”

“Stop talking.”

“My hands are visible.”

“Stop talking.”

“You have not articulated an offense.”

“I said stop talking.”

The handbag sat near his boot.

He kicked it away.

The dusty-rose leather bag skidded across the concrete, struck the base of the fuel pump, and spilled open.

Wallet.

Lipstick.

A folded pair of reading glasses.

Civilian car keys.

A slim black cardholder.

The officer glanced toward it.

The woman's expression changed.

“Do not search that.”

He ignored her.

“I am instructing you clearly. Do not search my property without lawful authority.”

“You don't instruct me.”

He reached for the handcuffs on his belt.

She closed her eyes for one second.

Not from fear.

To control anger.

She had commanded thousands of people.

She had spent years teaching officers that authority under pressure was a test of discipline.

Anyone could be calm when obeyed.

Command began when someone challenged you, misunderstood you, insulted you, or forced you to choose between ego and procedure.

She could feel her pulse in her neck.

She could also feel the officer's grip becoming tighter.

The younger officer spoke again.

“Sergeant, maybe we should verify the plate first.”

The first officer turned enough to glare.

“You questioning me in front of a detainee?”

“No, I'm just saying—”

“Then run it.”

The younger officer hesitated.

Walked toward the patrol car.

The woman looked after him.
