The cashier behind the window was looking directly toward pump six.

The Black woman returned her attention to the officer.

“What activity?”

“You've been hanging around a vehicle that doesn't appear to belong to you.”

For the first time, something moved across her face.

Not fear.

Not yet.

Recognition.

She had spent almost twenty years in command environments.

She knew when a conversation was built around facts.

She also knew when facts were being invented in real time to support a decision already made.

“I arrived less than two minutes ago.”

The officer said nothing.

She continued.

“I inserted my card.”

Silence.

“I have the key.”

Nothing.

“The vehicle unlocked when I approached it.”

The officer shifted his stance.

“Ma'am, you're making this harder than it needs to be.”

That sentence changed the temperature of the interaction.

She had heard versions of it before.

Usually directed at other people.

Subordinates.

Civilians.

Junior personnel.

People standing beneath authority who were expected to understand that compliance mattered more than clarity.

Her voice stayed calm.

“I'm asking you to explain why you approached me.”

The officer pointed toward the SUV.

“We received a call.”

“From whom?”

“That's not your concern.”

“What was reported?”

“You matching a suspicious-person description.”

“What description?”

The officer stared.

She waited.

“What description?”

He raised his chin.

“Black female.”

The younger officer near the patrol car looked down.

The woman blinked once.

“That's the description?”

The officer immediately added:

“Near a dark SUV.”

She looked around.

Three dark SUVs were visible at the station.

A black crossover at pump two.

A dark blue vehicle near the car wash.

Hers.

She nodded slowly.

“So the description was a Black woman near a dark vehicle.”

The officer's jaw tightened.

“You want to keep doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Being argumentative.”

“I am asking questions.”

“You don't ask the questions here.”

The younger officer looked up.

The woman stared at the first officer for several seconds.
