A niece who wanted help choosing college classes.

An argument about whether the general was eating enough.

A mother who had looked at her fitted civilian dress and said, “Good. You still know how to dress like a person.”

She had laughed.

Then the convoy schedule changed.

A communications malfunction delayed two vehicles that were supposed to meet her farther north.

She told the colonel coordinating the movement that she would drive herself to the rendezvous point.

He objected.

She ignored him.

Now she was twenty minutes early.

The SUV needed fuel.

So she stopped.

That simple decision would become national news before midnight.

At that moment, however, she knew none of that.

She only knew a large white police officer had crossed the forecourt, stopped several feet from her, and pointed one thick finger toward the pavement.

“Move away from the SUV.”

She kept one hand resting lightly beside the fuel door.

“Why?”

The officer's face tightened.

“Because I told you to.”

Behind him stood another officer, younger and leaner, perhaps thirty, watching from near the front of the patrol car.

The second officer did not approach.

The woman looked from one to the other.

“Am I being detained?”

The first officer took another step.

“What did I just say?”

She kept her voice level.

“I heard what you said. I'm asking why.”

The fuel pump clicked.

Authorization approved.

She had not even lifted the nozzle.

The officer looked toward the SUV's tinted windows.

“Who owns this vehicle?”

She stared at him.

“I do.”

“Registration?”

“In the vehicle.”

“Keys?”

“In my hand.”

He looked at the key fob dangling from her fingers.

“Give them to me.”

“No.”

The answer came without anger.

That seemed to surprise him.

His finger lowered.

“What?”

“I asked whether I am detained.”

“You're being investigated.”

“For what?”

“Suspicious activity.”

The woman glanced around the gas station.

A man filling a pickup truck had stopped pretending not to watch.

A woman near the convenience-store entrance held a bag of ice against her hip.
